THE SWAN CENTRE
We are a team of experienced clinicians dedicated to helping people recover from difficulties related to eating, weight, dieting and body image. We work closely with psychiatrists, GPs, dietitians and other health professionals to accommodate a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment.
We are committed to providing the highest quality care to our patients using treatment approaches based on evidence from scientific research. We are well-known for providing Family Based Treatment (FBT, formerly known as “the Maudsley Method”) for children and adolescents with eating disorders and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for adults and older adolescents with eating disorders.
We also have a strong focus on research in order to improve the understanding and treatment of eating disorders. Research conducted by our team members, and in particular by our Clinical Director Dr Sue Byrne, has been published in international peer-reviewed journals and has been presented at many national and international conferences. You can see a selection of our team’s published research and presentations here.
Why is the clinic named THE SWAN CENTRE?
There are several reasons why our clinic has been named The Swan Centre.
First, the name corresponds to that of a landmark study, the SWAN study, that was led by Dr Susan Byrne between 2010 and 2016 and was based in Western Australia. The Strong Without Anorexia Nervosa (SWAN) study was a trial run at clinics around Australia to compare three new treatments for anorexia nervosa in adults. This was one of the largest clinical trials of treatments for anorexia nervosa in the world, with results impacting significantly on our understanding and approach to the treatment of anorexia nervosa. The results of this trial have been presented at national and international conferences and published in international journals.
Second, the swan is a well-known symbol of Western Australia. It is a fitting symbol for our new and innovative service.
Third, the swan represents inner strength, resilience and transformation; qualities that we aim to enhance in all of our patients.
